The sensor light is designed to operate only in darkness by combining two types of sensors: a photocell (dusk-to-dawn) sensor and a motion sensor (PIR). The photocell sensor measures the ambient light level and ensures the entire system only becomes active when it is dark.
Once the light level is low enough, the motion sensor activates the light when movement is detected within its range. This dual-sensor design conserves energy and extends battery life (for battery-powered models) by preventing the light from turning on unnecessarily during the day or when there is enough light. The light typically turns off automatically after a set period (e.g., 10-30 seconds) if no further motion is detected.
